United States Supreme Court on Tuesday weighed restrictions on the drug that is most widely used in to terminate pregnancies.
The court which overturned the constitutional right to abortion nearly two years ago, is to hear oral arguments on access to the abortion pill mifepristone as anti-abortion groups are seeking to have the drug banned, claiming that despite its long track record it is unsafe.
Mifepristone was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in two thousand estimating that more than five point nine million Americans have used it to end pregnancies since then.
The case stems from a ruling last year by a US District Court judge in Texas, an appointee of former Republican president Donald Trump that would have prohibited mifepristone.
Polls repeatedly show a clear majority of Americans support continued access to safe abortion, even as conservative groups push to limit the procedure or ban it out rightly.
The Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on the abortion pill case by the end of June four months before the presidential election in which abortion is almost certain to be a major topic.
