Soil Scientist warns of dangers posed by burnt bricks business to environment

A Soil Scientist at the Joseph Sarwuan Tarkaa University, Makurdi, Doctor Samuel Wuese has canvassed the establishment of a special site for burn bricks activities in the state to mitigate the challenges that come aftermath of the mining on the soil to humans and the environment.

Doctor Wuese made the call in an interview with our correspondent, drawing attention to the dangers posed on environment by persistent excavation clay for burnt bricks

He said that the constant mining of soil on the River Banks does not only give room for flooding, and poses grave danger to the environment and habitation.

 

The Soil and Water Management Specialist further advocated a partnership between Ministries of Water, Environment and Climate Change and that of Agriculture and Food Security on a framework that will enlighten the public especially bricklayers on best ways of carrying out their business activities.

Reacting, a burnt bricklayer, at the Niongun settlement in Makurdi, Dominic Orjime, who noted the financial stability the business has created for him, however said, he was not aware of the environmental hazards caused by their activities.

Another bricklayer, Samson Bugu of Agboughul settlement also in Makurdi, told our correspondent that he ventured into the business after several years of waiting for a job after graduation, stating the gains he has made from the business.

 

Bugu who also said he did not know the environment threats the business poses sued for awareness and orientation campaigns by the relevant authorities to enlighten those engaged in the business for best practices.
