Concerns have been raised over heaps of refuse on some major roads within Makurdi metropolis, with a call for prompt evacuation by the Benue State Environmental Sanitation Authority, BENSESA.
Some residents of the town who raised the concern in separate interviews with our correspondent Edmund Asaar, stated that the situation could result to disease outbreak and called on the people who dispose waste in gutters, road dividers and water channels to also desist.
A resident of Bem Tseen Street, off George Akume Way, Kelvin Shagba, said indiscriminate disposal of waste is common on the road divider on George Akume Way, noting that it could lead to environmental pollution, health hazards and other negative impacts if nothing was done.
For a resident of High Level, Philip Ishor, who expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of people over indiscriminate dumping of refuse, BENSESA should improve on its services by regularly evacuating refuse.
In the Wadata part of Makurdi, a resident, Terzungwe Koromi, said the community collectively pays some youths to evacuate the refuse to avoid accumulation as according to him, BENSESA only services the area once in a while.
When contacted, the General Manager of BENSESA, Francis Onah, said the agency was aware of the development and was working tirelessly to keep the town clean, noting that staff were already attending to the situation on Modern Market road towards High Level Market, with plans of proceeding to other areas.
He added that waste buckets would also be provided at every refuse collection point to check indiscriminate dumping.
