Mrs. Abosede Aloba, the mother of the late singer Ilerioluwa, aka Mohbad, and actor Yomi Fabiyi have become embroiled in a dispute over allegations involving the late singer’s brother, Adura.
On December 13, 2024, Fabiyi filed a petition with the Lagos State Police Command, accusing Adura of initiating an Instagram conversation in which he claimed to have video evidence of Mohbad’s death. Fabiyi alleged that during the conversation, Adura demanded N3 million in Bitcoin in exchange for the video.
However, Adura denied the accusation, explaining that the message came from a friend to whom he had sold his phone.
At a World Press Conference on Wednesday at the Radisson Blu in Ikeja, Lagos, Fabiyi reiterated that the message came from Adura, insisting that he knew about his brother’s death.
In response, Mrs. Abosede Aloba defended her son, stating that if Adura had known the cause of Mohbad’s death, he would have spoken up. Expressing her displeasure with the accusations, she insisted that she was not ready to lose Adura in the same way she lost Mohbad, asserting that he had no knowledge of the message.
She said, “They killed Mohbad, and you want me to lose his brother unjustly. He knows nothing about his brother’s death; do not implicate my son. I am not happy that I lost Mohbad because if he were alive, I wouldn’t be sitting here with you. They took my precious gift away, and I won’t let them take Adura, too.
“It was Damola who used Adura’s message to (Yomi) Fabiyi. He confided in me, and I even wanted to take him to court; when I challenged him, he apologised, begging me that he never knew that was how the matter would turn out to be.
“At this point, I thought you wanted to launder my son’s image. He has denied this allegation countless times, but you still called this press conference to taint his image. Those who are using my son’s death for their gains, I leave them to God. This was how they started with Promise (Mohbad). Nobody knows what I’m going through. Imole would not know what killed his brother and keep this quiet,” she added.
In his response, Fabiyi said the content of the message was what mattered to him and not the sender.
He added that he wasn’t convinced that it wasn’t Adura who sent him the message.
He said, “There is no way I would wish Adura or Mohbad any harm. If it wasn’t Adura who sent the message explaining Mohbad’s death, would you want me to keep quiet? You weren’t there when Mohbad died, so you may not know what happened.
“All I am trying to say is that it was Adura’s handle that sent me the message. I don’t have anything against him. When I saw the message, I thought you wanted to help your brother. If you make a mistake and the person collects N3m from me, would you want me to keep quiet? I can’t,” he said.
Mohbad passed away at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, with the circumstances surrounding his death sparking widespread controversy on social media. A former signee of Naira Marley’s Marlian Music, Mohbad left the label in February 2022. In response to his death, the Lagos State Police Command formed a 13-member special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to look into the matter.
The investigation led to the arrest of Naira Marley and controversial Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, among others. On September 21, 2023, Mohbad’s body was exhumed for an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
