Obi donates N7.5m to Plateau IDPs as Gov Alia stops visit to Benue

Amid the devastation and grief caused by recent violent attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, visited the state to deliver a message of compassion, unity, and urgent intervention.
Journeying from Abuja to Jos and into the heart of the affected communities, Obi walked among mourning families, displaced children, and destroyed homes—offering comfort, listening to their stories, and standing in solidarity with those left reeling from the tragedy.
He wrote on his X handle: “What has happened here is heartbreaking and utterly unacceptable.”Consequently, Obi donated N7.5 million to support the welfare and continued education of the displaced children. He said his gesture was a small but crucial step towards healing and rebuilding.
Standing alongside Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Peter Obi extended his heartfelt condolences to the people of Plateau State, emphasizing the urgent need for leadership anchored in justice, empathy, and decisive action.
Meanwhile, in Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has distanced himself and his administration from reports surrounding a purported visit by Obi to the state.
Speculation had been rife that the former Anambra State governor, known for his frequent visits to Benue during the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom, was expected in Makurdi on Monday. It was also reported that Obi planned to visit the Tiv paramount ruler, HRM Tor Tiv, Prof. James Iorzua Ayatse, in Gboko, as well as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Abagena and Udei in Guma Local Government Area.
However, in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kulas Tersoo, the Benue State Government clarified that it had no involvement in, nor any official knowledge of, the proposed visit.
The statement reads: “The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, wishes to inform the public that he is not expecting any August visitor today (yesterday).”
“He is currently engaged in high-profile meetings with key state actors to discuss critical issues affecting our state.

“Therefore, he strongly advises against any group or high-profile individual(s) attempting to enter the state for any kind of visit that may generate political assemblies without prior approval.

“For anyone considering a visit to Benue State without the Governor’s knowledge, it is imperative to reconsider such plans, as the safety and security of individuals in this regard cannot be guaranteed.

“Also, the public is to note that all individuals or groups intending to visit IDPs in Benue State must first seek and obtain written permission from Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA)”.
