JUST IN: ASUU elects new national president

Chris Piwuna, a Professor of Medicine and Consultant Psychiatrist, has been elected as the new National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
He succeeds Emmanuel Osodeke, a Professor of Agriculture at the University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State, who was elected in May 2021.
Prior to his election, Prof. Piwuna served as the union’s National Vice President and was formerly the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, Plateau State.
He emerged as president following a closely contested election held during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress at the University of Benin, Edo State, defeating Adamu Babayo, a professor from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi State.
An official communique from ASUU is expected at the conclusion of the congress on Monday.
