The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has unveiled plans to digitalize primary healthcare delivery across all 774 local government areas in the country.
The initiative is part of a broader push to enhance service delivery, promote transparency, and boost citizen engagement at the grassroots level.
This resolution was one of the key outcomes of ALGON’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held from July 16 to 17, 2025, at Zuma Hill Resort in Niger State.
In a communiqué released after the two-day gathering, the association reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing national healthcare and nutrition reforms. It noted that increased collaboration with federal agencies and development partners is already making a positive impact in local communities.
ALGON also expressed strong support for implementing a digital healthcare system to strengthen governance, improve financing mechanisms, and ensure greater accountability in primary healthcare facilities. The initiative will be backed by both government institutions and private sector partners.
ALGON said it was committed to expanding partnerships with the Office of the Vice President, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), UNICEF, and other stakeholders involved in the Nutrition 774 Initiative, maternal and child health services, and decentralised birth registration.
The association described the partnerships as critical to achieving improved health outcomes, particularly for poor and vulnerable populations.
Adikibe, in his remarks, pledged to contribute his administrative experience to help steer ALGON’s current policy direction in line with national priorities.
The NEC praised the Office of the Vice President for focusing the grassroots and hailed the Gates Foundation for its support in expanding access to essential medicines through the Axmed Market Place platform.
It pledged continued support for the agreement with NASSCO to expand the National Social Register, describing it as a tool to improve planning and resource allocation at the council level.
The meeting was attended by ALGON Board of Trustees members, state chairmen, development partners, and officials from key federal agencies.
A minute of silence was observed in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari and two serving council chairmen who recently passed away, Hon. Lawal Yau’u of Gumel LGA in Jigawa and Hon. Aminu Hamidu of Bakori LGA in Katsina State.
