Armed cultists, believed to be members of the infamous Greenlanders gang, launched a violent attack on the Igbogene Community in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Wednesday night. Around 8 pm, approximately 10 attackers, armed with deadly weapons, stormed the area, killing three people, including the son of a former community vigilante leader known as “Money Sweet.”
The attack sparked panic among residents, who fled their homes in fear, locking themselves inside to escape the rampaging cultists. The community is left shaken by the tragic loss and the growing sense of insecurity in the region.
A local resident revealed that the first victim was the son of a former vigilante leader, who was shot dead near his home.
The second victim, reportedly not a cultist, was tragically killed after failing to reveal the whereabouts of his elder brother.
Investigations revealed that the attack stemmed from a violent rivalry between the notorious Bobos and Greenlanders cult groups, and the cultists involved are said to be residents and indigenes of the Igbogene community.
The youth president of the Igbogene Community, Ezekiel Igbenivie, who confirmed the development, said those involved have absconded, “but one of those persons shot is still alive. He is receiving treatment.”
The arrival of the police teams of Operation Doo Akpo, the Anti-kidnapping and the Rapid Response Team, however, calm down the situation.
Spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command, Musa Mohammed, who also confirmed the incident, said those shot include one Donaldson Mison, 28yrs; Addy Mulan, 27; and Greenboy Dudella, 29yrs.
