The Association of Arewa Yoruba Youths (AAYY) has clarified that the rumored governorship ambition of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, is not a crime, emphasizing that he is constitutionally eligible to run for any elective position, just like any other citizen.
Recently, there has been growing speculation about Seyi Tinubu’s potential candidacy for the Lagos State governorship in 2027, with several groups reportedly expressing support for his bid.
In a statement issued by the group’s National Coordinator, Lawal Hussein Taiye, AAYY affirmed that Seyi Tinubu has the constitutional right to contest for any political office in the country.
According to Hussein: “President George H.W. Bush of the USA served as the 41st President, and his son, George W. Bush, became the 43rd President. Additionally, two of President Bush’s sons served as governors of Florida and Texas, completing their tenures successfully without controversy.
“Similarly, in Nigeria, Senator Bukola Saraki served as governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011, while his sister, Gbemisola Saraki, served as a senator during the same period. Although Gbemisola later contested to succeed her brother as governor, she was unsuccessful.”
Hussein, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the Tinubu Mukeso Group, stressed the need to encourage qualified individuals to contribute to Nigeria’s progress and development, regardless of their family background.
He added: “What we should be advocating for are leaders of unquestionable character who can drive the country toward progress and development. Focusing on trivial matters will only hinder our journey to achieving Nigeria’s potential.
“With Seyi Tinubu as governor of Lagos State, who knows? It might mark the beginning of a significant transformation for the state. Any Nigerian qualified for a position should be encouraged and supported, as the dividends of good governance benefit everyone.”
Hussein reiterated that the group’s main goal is to ensure a better, united, and peaceful Nigeria, emphasizing that such unity is essential for the nation to become a global force in all spheres of life.
He added: “Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural resources that can enable us to compete favorably with any country in the world. However, our focus on divisive issues has kept us from reaching our full potential as a nation. It’s time we prioritize what truly matters to move forward as a united country.”
