The Benue State House of Assembly has called on the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, to suspend the ongoing teachers’ recruitment exercise and requested the Chairman of the Board to appear before it next week Tuesday.
This followed a motion on the floor of the House on Thursday by the Member representing Makurdi South, Douglas Akya.
The lawmaker drew the attention of the House that shortlisted names of successful applicants in the computer based test were contrary to requirements as specified in the advertisement earlier released.
He urged the House to cause the SUBEB Chairman to appear before it to also explain to the House the law that gave the Board the powers to recruit teachers on behalf of Local Governments Councils.
Seconding the motion, Deputy Majority Leader and Member for Makurdi North, Alfred Emberga, noted that most of those who got the required cut-off marks were not shortlisted.
The Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, directed that the SUBEB Chairman appear before the House at its executive session.
Also, a motion calling on the State Government to convert Government Day Secondary School, Aliade to a Science and Technical College was brought to the House by the Member for Gwer-East, Elias Audu, who stated that the Two thousand and Six Law establishing Science and Technical Education Board, empowers it to establish colleges in each Local Government Area, saying Gwer East and some Local Governments do not have the schools established.
Audu further requested that the House should urge the State Governor to reinstate the appointments of all staff terminated at Mbatiav Science and Technical College and Government Science and Technical College, Aondoana .
