Beyond her familiar title as former First Lady of Benue State, Dr. Eunice Erdoo Ortom has a story shaped by education, public service, humanitarian engagement and political experience. As she prepares to contest the 2027 senatorial election for Benue North-West, her journey offers a glimpse into the woman seeking to translate years of public engagement into legislative representation.
Born on August 27, 1972, in Jos, Plateau State, Eunice Ortom hails from Aondoana in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. She attended Nativity Private School, Makurdi, and Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Gboko, before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she obtained a B.Sc. in International Studies in 1997.
She subsequently earned an M.Sc. in International Relations and Strategic Studies from Benue State University, Makurdi, in 2004 and later completed a PhD in Political Science.
Her academic achievements preceded her emergence into the public spotlight as the wife of a governor. They provided a foundation for a career that took her through various public institutions in Benue State.
FROM PUBLIC SERVICE TO HUMANITARIAN ENGAGEMENT
Eunice Ortom began her public-service career during her National Youth Service Corps programme at Benue State University in 1998–1999. She subsequently served in different capacities within the Benue State Civil Service, including the Office of the Head of Service and the Office of the Accountant-General.
Her career also included work with the Benue State Development Project on HIV/AIDS and the Benue State AIDS Control Agency, where she served as a senior administrative officer and gender focal person between 2007 and 2010. She later worked in the Ministry of Finance.
These experiences exposed her to public administration, institutional processes and social-development concerns.
Her humanitarian interests found expression through the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation, which focuses on areas including health, education and agriculture. Programmes associated with her public engagements have included educational support, women’s empowerment, public-health awareness and assistance to vulnerable people.
The significance of such interventions lies ultimately in their impact on beneficiaries and the sustainability of their outcomes. Nevertheless, the foundation remains an important part of her public profile and reflects the social-development concerns she has pursued over the years.
EXPERIENCE IN GOVERNANCE/LEADERSHIP
When her husband, Chief Samuel Ortom, became Governor of Benue State in May 2015, Eunice Ortom assumed the responsibilities associated with the office of First Lady.
During her eight years in Government House, her public engagements focused on women, children, education, healthcare and vulnerable communities.
The period coincided with severe humanitarian challenges in Benue, particularly displacement arising from insecurity and attacks on rural communities. Women and children in affected areas faced enormous difficulties accessing shelter, healthcare, food and education.
Her humanitarian activities and public-health advocacy formed part of the broader response to these challenges.
However, her public identity extends beyond her marriage to a former governor. Her educational qualifications, civil-service experience and foundation activities constitute a personal record that deserves independent consideration.
That distinction is particularly important as she seeks an elective office. A Senate seat carries responsibilities that cannot be discharged through political association alone. It demands independent judgment, effective representation, legislative competence and accountability to constituents.
FROM THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE TO THE SENATE
In 2026, Peoples Democratic Party stakeholders in Benue North-West (Zone B) presented Dr. Eunice Ortom as their candidate for the 2027 senatorial election.
Her emergence followed consultations within the party, including discussions about zoning the seat to the Nongov axis of Guma Local Government Area. Following Chief Samuel Ortom’s decision not to contest, party stakeholders appealed to his wife to accept the nomination.
Her candidacy has generated political discussion, including questions about the circumstances of her emergence and her relationship with the former governor. PDP stakeholders have defended the process, describing it as the outcome of consultations and harmonious consensus among party leaders and stakeholders.
She has since embarked on campaign activities, including the inauguration of a campaign team representing the district’s seven local government areas and the commissioning of a senatorial campaign office in Makurdi.
These developments mark a transition from public administration, humanitarian engagement and the role of First Lady to the pursuit of an elective legislative mandate.
THE EXPECTATIONS OF ZONE B
Benue North-West faces pressing challenges, including insecurity, agricultural disruption, inadequate infrastructure, limited economic opportunities and gaps in access to healthcare and education.
Farmers need safer access to their fields and markets. Young people need opportunities for employment and skills development. Women need greater economic opportunities, while communities affected by insecurity require sustained attention and effective advocacy.
Although a senator cannot resolve every local challenge single-handedly, the office provides important avenues for action through legislation, federal oversight, budget scrutiny, engagement with ministries and agencies, and advocacy for development projects.
Dr. Eunice Ortom’s background in public administration, political science and humanitarian engagement could provide a foundation for addressing these concerns.
Her candidacy also adds to the wider conversation about women’s participation in Nigerian politics. Women contribute significantly to agriculture, commerce, education, healthcare and community development, yet, remain underrepresented in elected legislative institutions.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Dr. Eunice Ortom’s public journey encompasses several phases: the pursuit of higher education, service within Benue State institutions, humanitarian engagement and eight years as First Lady.
Her candidacy represents an opportunity to bring those experiences into the legislative arena to serve her people.
The Senate is fundamentally different from Government House. Its responsibilities demand legislative initiative, sound judgment, effective oversight and consistent engagement with constituents. Dr. Eunice Ortom possesses what it takes to achieve all these.
As the 2027 election approaches, the people of Benue North-West Senatorial District will have the opportunity to assess her experience alongside her proposals, priorities and capacity to represent their interests.
Ultimately, her legacy will not be determined by the title of First Lady or her marriage to a former governor. It will depend on the ideas she advances, the commitments she makes and the results she delivers, if entrusted with the mandate.
For Dr. Eunice Erdoo Ortom, the journey beyond the First Lady’s title has begun. The next chapter will be defined by what she offers the people of Zone B and what she does with the opportunity to serve.
