What I Saw When Aondoakaa Visited Igede Land

By Dr Terver Akase

There are political outings, and there are moments that leave lasting impressions. Friday’s visit by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate in Benue State, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, to Oju for the 2026 Igede Agba New Yam Festival belonged firmly in the latter category.

As a member of the delegation that accompanied Chief Aondoakaa to Igede land, I witnessed firsthand the warmth, enthusiasm and goodwill that greeted his arrival. From the moment our convoy entered Oju, it was evident that the people were eager to receive a man many now see as a credible alternative for the future of Benue State.

The ancient town was alive with colour, music and cultural splendour as sons and daughters of Igede land gathered to celebrate one of their most cherished festivals. But beyond the cultural displays and festivities, there was a palpable excitement surrounding the presence of Chief Aondoakaa and the PDP leadership at the event.

In company of the Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Abba Moro, Chief Aondoakaa received a reception that reflected the deep respect many people hold for him across the state. The atmosphere became even more electrifying when Senator Moro formally presented him to the gathering as the PDP’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

The crowd responded enthusiastically. Cheers erupted from different sections of the arena as Senator Moro extolled Aondoakaa’s credentials, experience and capacity to lead Benue State. It was one of those moments when the connection between a leader and the people becomes visible.

Chief Aondoakaa and Senator Moro had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Adirahu Ny’Igede, His Royal Highness Chief Oga Ero. The visit underscored the respect both leaders have for traditional institutions and cultural heritage. The royal father received the delegation warmly, setting the tone for what turned out to be a memorable outing.

Throughout the celebration, Chief Aondoakaa demonstrated a genuine appreciation for the culture and traditions of the Igede people. He commended the community for preserving a festival that promotes unity, identity and cultural pride. His remarks resonated strongly with many participants who view the preservation of their heritage as an essential part of their collective future.

One of the highlights of his interaction with the people was his emphasis on development. He spoke about the need for improved road infrastructure linking the two local government areas in Igede land with other parts of Benue State, a concern that drew visible approval from many in attendance. For a people who have long desired better connectivity and greater economic opportunities, the message struck a chord.

What stood out most, however, was not merely the speeches or the formalities. It was the spontaneous reactions of ordinary people. Men, women and young people made efforts to catch a glimpse of the PDP candidate, exchange greetings with him, take photographs and express their support. Everywhere he moved, people surged forward to welcome him. The excitement was high.

The delegation itself reflected the importance attached to the visit. Chief Aondoakaa was accompanied by his running mate, Dr. Oyije Ochaekiti Ogbenjuwa, the Benue State Chairman of PDP, Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Adaji, and several other party leaders and stakeholders, while our hosts led by the PDP candidate for Oju/Obi Federal Constituency, Major General Ede Ode (Rtd), staged a memorable show. Together, we participated in a festival that remains one of the most significant cultural events in Benue State.

As we departed Oju at the end of the day’s activities, one conclusion seemed unavoidable: Chief Michael Aondoakaa’s outing at the Igede Agba Festival was far more than a ceremonial appearance. It was an opportunity for direct engagement with the people, and judging by the reception he received, Igede land sent a clear message that it was delighted to host him.

For those of us who witnessed the events firsthand, it was a remarkable demonstration of hospitality, cultural pride and political goodwill. The 2026 Igede Agba Festival will be remembered not only for its rich celebration of Igede heritage, but also for the overwhelming welcome extended to the 2027 PDP governorship candidate by the people of Igede land.
